Giving back with purpose: Julie and Chris McCall’s journey with the community foundation

When Chris McCall attended a meeting hosted by the Community Foundation, he expected to learn a little more about philanthropy. What he walked away with, however, was something far more meaningful, a deep appreciation for the many creative ways individuals can make a difference in their own community.

“I was impressed with the ideas they shared about how to direct more resources toward local causes,” Chris recalls. “It really opened my eyes to the impact we could have right here at home.”

Inspired by that experience, Chris and his wife Julie decided to open a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) through the Community Foundation. Since then, their giving has become more intentional, flexible, and impactful.

“Having a DAF has actually motivated us to give even more,” they explain. “Whenever we become aware of a need, we can simply reach out to the Community Foundation. They’re quick to help us explore how best to meet that need.”

One of the most meaningful outcomes of their partnership with the Foundation has been the creation of an annual scholarship in memory of two of Julie’s childhood friends who passed away. With the help of the Foundation, the couple established a fund that honors those friendships while supporting students in pursuit of higher education.

“Through this scholarship, we’re not only keeping the memory of our friends alive, but also giving students a little extra support to achieve their dreams,” Julie says.

Attending the annual awards ceremony where the scholarship is presented has become a cherished tradition.

“It’s incredibly heartwarming to witness the moment these students find out they’ve been selected,” Chris says. “To know that we’ve played even a small role in helping someone take the next step in their journey—it’s humbling and deeply rewarding.”

When asked to describe their experience with the Community Foundation, Chris and Julie don’t hesitate: “Compassion and professionalism.”

Those two words reflect not only how the Foundation operates, but also the spirit in which it empowers donors to create lasting, local impact.
